The Pension Stress Test
Is your Retirement Mission Ready?
As a first responder, your retirement math is different from the average "9-to-5" worker. A traditional plan won't cover your unique benefits or the specific tax traps waiting at the end of your career. Use this checklist to identify the gaps in your current strategy.
1. The "Gap Year" Stress Test
• The Problem: Many first responders retire between ages 50 and 55, but Medicare doesn’t start until age 65.
• [ ] Medical Coverage: Have you calculated the true cost of private health insurance for those 10+ years?
• [ ] The $3,000 Exemption: Are you utilizing the HELPS Retirees Act to exclude up to $3,000 annually from your pension to pay for health premiums tax-free?
2. The DROP & Tax Stress Test
• The Problem: Taking a DROP (Deferred Retirement Option Program) lump sum can trigger a massive "tax bomb" if handled incorrectly.
• [ ] The 20% Trap: Is your plan designed to roll over the DROP balance directly into a qualified account to avoid an immediate 20% withholding?
• [ ] Bracket Creep: Will your DROP payout, combined with your new pension income, push you into a higher tax bracket this year?
3. The "Rule of 50" Liquidity Test
• The Problem: Most people wait until 59½ to touch retirement funds, but you don't have to.
• [ ] Penalty-Free Access: Are you aware that "Qualified Public Safety Employees" who separate from service in or after the year they turn 50 can take penalty-free distributions from governmental plans?
• [ ] Plan Compatibility: Does your specific 457(b) or defined benefit plan document actually allow for these early withdrawals without the 10% penalty?
4. The Survivor Benefit Stress Test
• The Problem: Your pension doesn't always automatically carry over to your spouse at 100%.
• [ ] The "Haircut": Have you calculated the permanent reduction in your monthly check required to provide a 50% or 100% survivor benefit?
• [ ] The Life Insurance Pivot: Have you compared the cost of the pension "haircut" against a private life insurance policy to see which protects your family more efficiently? How Did You Score?
If you checked fewer than all four boxes, your retirement plan may have a critical vulnerability.
